2nd Grade Curriculum
Schoolwide Reading FundamentalsReading Fundamentals has a central mission to develop, expand, and enhance the skills, strategies, and tools students can use to make meaning of and interact with text. Reading Fundamentals Units of Study exist inside a balanced literacy framework. Within this framework, there are opportunities to read to students (mentor texts), to read with students (shared texts), and to have students read independently (books and other texts at their independent reading levels).
Schoolwide Writing FundamentalsBecause writing matters for success in school, the community, and the workplace, Schoolwide's Writing Fundamentals Units of Study have a central mission to improve students' writing by providing explicit instruction that focuses on demonstrating why writers write and how writers communicate their ideas effectively. In order for students to write with power and purpose, the Writing Fundamentals units use quality literature and informational texts to provide authentic examples of various genres and text types.
Scholastic Guided Reading
Guided Reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can all read similar levels of texts. Guided reading gives students the chance to apply reading strategies to new text. The teacher provides support, but the ultimate goal is independent reading.
Words Their Way Spelling
Words Their Way’s developmentally-driven, hands-on instructional approach has been a phenomenon in word study, providing a practical way to study words. The keys to this research-based approach are to know students’ literacy progress, organize for instruction, and implement word study. This program gives all the tools needed to carry out word study instruction that will motivate and engage students, and help them to succeed in literacy learning. Ordered in a developmental format, Words Their Way complements the use of any existing phonics, spelling, and vocabulary curricula.
University of Chicago Everyday Math
Everyday Mathematics emphasizes the application of mathematics to real-world situations. Numbers, skills, and concepts are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday life, using multiple methods and strategies for solving problems and hands-on materials and manipulatives. Concepts are introduced and then built upon throughout the year and future grades.
TCI Social Studies
TCI's Social Studies Alive! programs teach students about the world around them in ways that make them excited to learn every day. TCI's curriculum includes hands-on activities, lesson plans, student handouts, assessment tools, and more. We give teachers all the tools they need to turn their social studies classroom into an engaging and stimulating experience for each and every student. With TCI's elementary programs, students don't just learn social studies. They learn social skills.
